ON ANGLING.                           255
ANGLER'S CHANT.
Up ! angler up ! and be off to the river,
Your heart light and free with the pleasure you feel ;
Nor care though with rain or with cold you may shiver, Provided with fish you replenish your creel.
Up ! angler up ! 'tis the season for slaughter, The morning is cheering, the weather is fine ;
The fish are on feed, in good order the water,
Then haste to the streams with your rod and your line.
With skill cast your bait, whether throwing the flies, Of the various kinds which " an old fisher" names ;
Enticing the grazling or salmon to rise,
Or spining for large heavy trout on the Thames.
Or, fishing the bottom, for barbel you search,
Or for roach, with a hair, or for bream, it may hap,
Or dipping for chub and for dace, or for perch, Or for pike trolling with gorge, hook, or snap.
However attractive your line may be made,
When you fish from the bank, when you fish from a boat,
May your skill be rewarded, your labour repaid, In using the gudgeon, the fly, or the float.
